What I do: “I am currently focused on building out educational offerings around the use of technology to improve health both at our annual conference, which draws more than 40,000 attendees, and throughout the year at smaller regional events.”

What I really do: “I bring the right people together at the right time, which truly is the magic of associations.”

Next-gen mentoring: Blessed with two mentors early on in her career, Amato currently mentors several younger professionals and finds it rewarding to watch them grow. “It also never hurts to learn something from the younger generation,” she says.

Next-level ideas: Under Amato, HIMSS has implemented “unconference” sessions, like one utilizing crowdsourcing. “I think the growing trend will be to allow attendees to play more of a role in shaping the educational content of an event including the selection of keynote speakers, educational content and even the location,” she shares. For the 2017 conference, Amato is working on an “ultimate secret shopper” program to further improve education sessions. She’s creating a focus group of first-time attendees from the 2016 show (she doesn’t want to use complete newbies, as the massive show can be overwhelming at first, she says) who will attend various sessions and rate the content and experience on different levels.
