Shannon BurkeShannon Burke, CMP
38, Director of Conference and Meetings
National Association for College Admission Counseling, Arlington, Va.

What she does: Burke directs and oversees a full suite of management services for a 7,500-person national conference, seven board meetings, 12 national committee meetings, two leadership meetings, two training meetings and others annually.

How I got here: “After graduating from James Madison University with a degree in media arts and design, I found a position as a graphic designer/meetings assistant. After my first meeting, I realized I preferred interacting with attendees over my computer screen.” She eventually became director of programs at Northern Virginia Technology Council and then conference manager at International Association of Fire Chiefs prior to NACAC.

Greatest career accomplishment: She successfully produced an international conference after losing access to all computer files only three weeks prior to the conference.
