2019 15 Over 50: Garland Preddy, CGMP

By Connect Staff, April 29, 2019

Garland Preddy, CGMP, works in Lewes, Delaware, as director of education and training for the Society of Government Meeting Professionals. As a 2019 15 Over 50 honoree, Preddy discusses her passion for the events industry.

What I do: I manage the speakers for our National Education Conference; teach the certification class and manage recertifications, including the Alternative Recertification Program, recruit speakers and manage monthly webinars and assist the chapters with monthly education and speakers.

How I got here: I had been a member of SGMP for several years before my retirement and contract with the federal government. I had been teaching the certification class since 2005. I was qualified to continue teaching and manage chapter education.

Greatest career accomplishment: I had managed the Director’s Honorary Awards program since 1981. In 1997 I was surprised by being awarded the Director’s Meritorious Service, which recognizes lifetime achievement for the agency.

What I am working on now: I revised and updated the Certified Government Meeting Professional Handbook. This is a 300-page document that requires updating every two years.

What I do outside of work: I volunteer for three charity organizations and love to knit.
