5 Venues to Know Outside Downtown Atlanta

By Matt Swenson, November 8, 2018

Georgia World Congress Center is aptly named a hub of international and national activity. But it doesn’t stand alone when the Peach State is on your mind. Consider these alternatives outside Atlanta’s downtown corridor.

The Whitley

This Luxury Collection Hotel is the newest offering in Buckhead, a high-end district with some of Atlanta’s best restaurants and shopping centers. The 507-room property, formerly the home of a Ritz-Carlton, is undergoing a steady stream of changes that reflect its independence. Managing Director David Friederich describes the hotel as “casual luxury,” meaning attendees should feel free to leave their tie at home. There are 31 event venues on property, totaling 30,000 square feet.

Omni Hotel at The Battery Atlanta

Luxury chain Omni hit it out of the park in Cobb County with this property overlooking SunTrust Park. The hotel is the piece de resistance of The Battery Atlanta, featuring restaurants, shopping and the Coca-Cola Roxy concert hall. The hotel has more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space. Groups can also utilize SunTrust Park for off-site receptions and/or behind-the-scenes tours.

City Springs

Sandy Springs, an incorporated city bordering Atlanta’s perimeter, is home to Fortune 500 companies like Mercedes-Benz USA, UPS, COX Enterprises and Veritiv. Previously, the city lacked the space to accommodate major meetings and events. Mayor Rusty Paul is confident a new $222 million venue should change that. The standout event space is the multipurpose Studio Theatre, which holds up to 350 attendees. In addition, the third floor conference center has flexible space and breakout rooms for meetings and events of various sizes. The 14-acre campus is a multi-use complex that also includes several restaurants, programmable green space and a performing arts center.

The Hotel at Avalon

The location in Alpharetta’s impressive outdoor shopping center Avalon is a 330-room high-end Autograph Hotel Collection property. Groups have access to 16 restaurants—including Antico Pizza and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams—and 75 shops. There’s also a Whole Foods Market inside Avalon. The hotel, which opened in January, includes 44,000 square feet of events space, highlighted by Alpharetta Conference Center, home of Connect Georgia in December.

Uncle Jack’s Meat House

PETA may not want to book a reception at Uncle Jack’s Meat House in Duluth, but People for Eating Tasty Animals might. Owned by former Food Network personality Willie Degel, this restaurant specializes in steaks, chops, ribs and seafood (including charred octopus). Groups or events using nearby Infinite Energy Center can rent the space for a private “meating” of about 100 people.
