Teambuilding at Extreme Sandbox: Can You Dig It?

By Stephanie Davis Smith, July 22, 2016

Your president is having a ball working a bulldozer; two board members are caged in a Caterpillar moving dirt; and your membership director is giddy working the crane arm of an excavator. No, they’re not breaking ground on a new office complex; they’re engaged in a new kind of teambuilding activity: construction instruction.

Only a few minutes outside Minneapolis near Mall of America, Extreme Sandbox is a new 10-acre, life-size playground for adults equipped with real-life construction rigs. It’s an unusual place to bring your team together (customizable packages for 10 to 100 people are available), develop problem-solving skills and give adults some playtime. A second location at Tanglewood Resort & Conference Center in Texas (between Dallas and Oklahoma City) opened in April.

Las Vegas also recently introduced a similar concept, Dig This. Featured in an episode of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules,” the “sandbox” can accommodate up to 13 people at a time for 90-minute sessions each, or you can buy out the entire place for the day and divide the time how you want. This trend brings new meaning to your executive team doing all the heavy lifting.
