San Antonio CVB Rebrands to Visit San Antonio

The San Antonio City Council approved to transition the city’s CVB to a new public-private nonprofit called Visit San Antonio, effective Oct. 1. This change will give the city—with its $13.4 billion tourism industry and 32 million-plus visitors each year—“more autonomy,” says Frank Miceli, newly appointed chairman of the CVB’s board of directors.

The CVB, which was formed in 1968 following the city’s role as host to the World’s Fair that year, has kept the city top of mind for planners looking to meet in the Lone Star State, but the city is looking to compete more successfully with other destinations.

San Antonio has seen a lot of positive change in recent years, including a $325 million expansion of Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, a lengthy extension of its famed River Walk and plans to improve the Alamodome in preparation for the NCAA Final Four tournament in April 2018.

Visit San Antonio hopes to see its marketing budget and operations expand following the change. “[The transition] allows us to be more agile, able to react quickly to changing market conditions,” says Casandra Matej, executive director of the current CVB. “It’s a transformative time in San Antonio, and this is a transformative moment.”
