The Best of Louisville: Shopping

By Vicki Arkoff, July 8, 2019

Louisville, Kentucky, is recognized as an international destination for festival events—most notably the Kentucky Derby—and conferences like Connect 2019. As one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachian Mountains, Louisville was named after King Louis XVI of France, but is celebrated as the All-American home of Muhammad Ali, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Louisville Slugger baseball bats and three of Kentucky’s six Fortune 500 companies. See what awaits you this August.

NuLu Short for “New Louisville,” this buzzing downtown district is the city’s latest hotspot, boasting boutique stores, antique shops and art galleries. Scout specializes in stylish home décor and gifts, Please & Thank You is a café and record shop, Revelry curates jewelry and apparel by local artists, Joe Ley Antiques fills an 1890s schoolhouse with treasures, Peace of the Earth sells locally made bath goodies and BLoFISH hawks gender-neutral clothes.

South Fourth Street This stretch has a three-century history is once again setting trends with boutiques like Craft(s) Gallery and Mercantile, Block Party, Regalo, and Art Eatables (a must for bourbon truffles). It borders the 4th Street Live Entertainment district of restaurants and nightclubs.

Butchertown Market The last remaining meatpacker is surrounded by hip new restaurants, breweries, quirky Hi-Five Doughnuts and an ax-throwing bar, Flying Axes. For retail therapy, Butchertown Market is just what the doctor ordered. Under one roof it features Work the Metal for handmade jewelry and unique keepsakes, Moss Hill Bath & Body, Cellar Door Chocolates and Bourbon Barrel Foods.
