San Jose Marriott Readies for Super Bowl 50

San Jose Marriott in California is ready for kickoff after the completion of a $10.5 million renovation in December 2015. Attached to the 367,500-sq.-ft. San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the AAA Four Diamond property will host the Carolina Panthers during Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7 at the 68,500-seat Levi’s Stadium (a 15-minute drive away). (Note: The Denver Broncos will stay at the 353-room Hilton San Jose that’s also attached to the convention center.) The team will be among the first to lay eyes on San Jose Marriott’s recent transformation, which includes updates to its lobby, 510 guest rooms, and a concierge lounge with a green grasslike wall and views of Silicon Valley.

Players and their families will fill the entire hotel, says John Southwell, general manager, noting that security is job No. 1 for a high-profile event like the Super Bowl. “Everyone you can think of will be represented in securing the hotel like they do at the stadium,” he says. “We have our own security in-house around the clock that’s sufficient for regular NFL teams, but not for the Super Bowl.”

0127_CS_Web_SanJoseMarriott_MainNot only is San Jose Marriott hosting the Super Bowl this year, it also will house players for the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. One collegiate team that used the hotel during Thanksgiving 2015 was so impressed by the property’s check-in experience that its planner used the experience as a model at all other hotels, says Southwell. San Jose Marriott has become popular among sports teams thanks to its smooth operations and logistics, he notes. Its location is also a plus: An access point to the city’s light rail and bus service is across the street from the hotel, providing easy access for football at Levi’s Stadium, soccer at the 18,000-seat Avaya Stadium and hockey at SAP Center arena.
